Annalise Murphy wins Radial silver at Rio 2016

Australia are coming on strong, and threaten to topple the mighty Team GB from their perch as the pre-eminent sailing team in the world. Tom Slingsby wrapped up Australia’s first gold of the regatta, but his mates in the 49er Nathan Outteridge and Tom Slingsby sealed 49er gold with a Medal Race to spare, as did the Kiwis for silver.

With Andy gone AWOL to the Olympic Park in London for a day, Justin has to update him on two days of drama back in Weymouth. Much to discuss - capsizing in the 49er, Irish domination in the Radial, Cypriot success in the Laser, and the underdog Ben Ainslie. Underdog???!

If you paid attention to the Laser Radial medal race at the Olympics in August, you’ll know that four sailors went into the deciding race effectively on equal points. Whoever beat who in the race would determine which of the four would take gold, silver and bronze - and which of the four would end up with nothing. It looked set to be a humdinger of a finale, and it didn’t disappoint. With multiple place changes throughout the 30-minute race, this race had everything, exactly what the architects of the medal race must have had in mind. For China’s Xu Lijia (and her British coach, none other than Y&Y contributor Jon Emmett), it was tears of joy. For Ireland’s Annalise Murphy in 4th place, it was tears of anguish.

Since winning Olympic gold in the Men’s Skiff – 49er at Rio 2016 five years ago, Pete Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL) have packed a whole lifetime of sailing achievement into their busy careers.

Few can relate to the agony of missing out on the Olympic podium like Lilian de Geus (NED). On Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro at the 2016 Olympic Games, the Dutch sailor missed the podium by just one point.

Hannah Mills gives an insight into what it took to win the 470 Women's gold medal with Saskia Clark at Rio 2016. "I was completely unprepared for how different an experience Rio would feel to London. London felt like the official Games, where you absolutely knew it was the Olympics and everything was where it should be. Rio however, felt like a very relaxed Games where you really had to focus on the fact it was the Olympics and this was it!!!"

Today saw 40 knots of wind blast out of nowhere and hit the Olympic sailing venue from the south-west. With sand whipping across Flamengo Beach, it was an eye-watering reminder that in Rio, you really do have to be prepared for anything. An Angolan 470 ventured out for some high-wind practice, but no one else was showing much interest. This was not the right time in the four-year cycle for putting bodies and equipment in jeopardy.
